There is less risk operating with groups than providing services for individual travellers. Company employees don't have to be in "alert" waiting for possible individual customers and with the group travel there is always clear timetable when the group arrives and leaves. Definitely there are some risks in group travel too. Mainly those are need of bigger capacities, possible deposits and other pre-arrangments which need funding. Also if something is going wrong compesations in reclamations.
Traditional ways of doing business are sometimes more emphasized in international group sales marketing. Fairs for professionals, workshops, sales visits among tour operators and travel agents, educational and familiarization trips are important. Pricing issues are essential in strategical thinking.
Group sales are seen in three different themes or combinations:
- individual groups
- group series
- incentive groups
There are also cycles in group sales and marketing. Especially in group series. The accessibility and transportations are important factors. Many times in incentive travel every sale is unique and rarely happens second time for the same customer. Sustainability, corporate social responsibility and quality management tools are those selling points the supplier or DMC should promote.
