Baltic Countries

We focus especially on Estonia and Latvia. Lithuania is currently less important market, but there is a steady tourism flow throughout the year.

Travel and tourism are seen as integral parts of the country’s economy and thus the development of this industry is constantly an important topic. Heavy competition among the numerous travel and tourism companies has led to a fast market development, where only those who provide high-quality service succeed. People have come to appreciate a high level of service and many companies which are unable to provide this struggle to maintain their business.

Despite the fast escalation of infections at the beginning of the year, GDP is projected to grow by 9.6% in 2021 and 4.5% in 2022, before slowing to 3.8% in 2023. Private consumption, driven by a gradual decline in the household saving ratio, the absorption of EU funds and investment will be the main drivers of growth. Inflation is expected to remain high in 2022.

Unemployment is expected to decrease gradually, but will remain above its pre-crisis level, while poverty is expected to increase from an already high level. Downside risks arise from the pandemic path, notably virus mutations, but the vaccination programme will make all adults eligible for vaccination by the summer. The Estonian market is the 10th most important target market area in Finland when it comes to bed nights (over 20 000/year).

Lithuania as outbound target market area is rather small. Statistically there is more demand for neighboring countries. Slight slow down of tourism expenditure is due to financial struggles locally. There is still steady flow of Lithuanian outbound visitors throughout the year.
