Artificial Intelligence Is Rapidly Reshaping How Travelers Plan Their Trips

Artificial intelligence has become one of the most influential technologies in travel planning, fundamentally changing how people search for inspiration, compare destinations and make booking decisions. What was once viewed as an experimental tool is now becoming an integral part of the customer journey.

According to Phocuswright’s 2026 report The AI Surge: Travel’s Fastest Behavioral Shift in a Decade, 56% of U.S. leisure travelers have already used AI for at least one stage of a trip, including planning, booking or in-destination assistance. The growth has been remarkably fast, increasing from 33% in early 2025 to 56% only a year later.

AI Has Become the First Step – Not the Final Decision

Generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT are increasingly the first place travelers turn to when exploring destinations or building itineraries. However, AI rarely replaces traditional travel websites, online travel agencies or search engines. Instead, it acts as an intelligent starting point that directs users to supplier websites, booking platforms and destination pages for further research and reservations.

This changing behaviour represents one of the most significant shifts in travel planning during the past decade.

Adoption Is Growing Faster Than Trust

While AI usage continues to accelerate, travelers still evaluate its recommendations critically. Only a minority fully trust AI-generated answers without verification. Many users compare recommendations across several sources before making a purchase decision.

Despite this cautious approach, travelers consistently report important benefits. AI helps reduce research time, simplifies destination comparisons, creates personalized itineraries and increases confidence during decision-making.

Every Generation Is Joining the AI Revolution

Millennials remain the most active AI users in travel, with almost three quarters using AI during the past year. Generation Z follows closely behind, while the fastest growth is currently occurring among older travelers, including Baby Boomers. AI is rapidly moving from an early-adopter technology to a mainstream consumer tool.

Travelers Expect More Than Inspiration

The role of AI is expanding beyond trip inspiration. Modern travelers increasingly expect AI to compare prices, summarize reviews, recommend suitable accommodation and even complete bookings on their behalf.

Phocuswright’s latest research shows that 44% of travelers would be willing to book directly through an AI platform, while 40% would allow an AI assistant to arrange flights and hotels automatically. Price comparisons, summarized customer reviews and trusted travel brands are the strongest drivers behind these expectations.

What This Means for the Travel Industry?

The next competitive advantage will not come simply from adding AI to websites or booking engines. Success will depend on how effectively travel companies combine AI with reliable content, real-time availability and seamless booking experiences.

Destinations, hotels, airlines and tour operators should ensure that their products are easily discoverable by AI-powered search tools while maintaining accurate, structured and up-to-date information across all digital channels.

As AI becomes a primary gateway to travel discovery, companies that provide trustworthy information and frictionless customer experiences will be best positioned to benefit from this rapidly changing marketplace.
