Travel Guide to Istanbul

Weather in November

November is a good time to visit Istanbul if you prefer cooler weather and fewer tourists. The weather is generally mild but changeable, with daytime temperatures typically around 15–18°C (59–64°F) and nights around 8–12°C (46–54°F). Rain is fairly common, so bring a waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes and clothes that can be worn in layers.

Population

Istanbul is Türkiye’s largest city and one of the world’s major metropolitan areas. According to the latest official population figures, 15,754,053 people lived in Istanbul at the end of 2025. The city accounts for about 18.3% of Türkiye’s total population.

Airport

The main international airport is Istanbul Airport (IST). It is located on the European side of Istanbul, in the Arnavutköy district, near the Black Sea, approximately 35 km from the city centre.

From the airport, you can travel to the city by:

Metro M11, which connects the airport with Gayrettepe.
Havaist airport buses, which serve several parts of Istanbul.
IETT buses.
Taxi, available 24 hours a day. Travel time to central Istanbul is often around one hour, depending on traffic.

Public Transportation

Istanbul has an extensive public transport network covering both the European and Asian sides of the city. The main options are:

Metro
Trams
Buses
Ferries
Marmaray trains
Funiculars

An Istanbulkart is the most convenient way to pay for public transportation. Ferries are particularly enjoyable because they provide beautiful views of the Bosphorus and connect areas such as Eminönü, Karaköy, Beşiktaş, Kadıköy and Üsküdar.

For sightseeing in the historic centre, the T1 tram is especially useful, with stops close to many major attractions.

Currency and Money Exchange

The official currency is the Turkish lira (TRY), written as ₺. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, particularly in hotels, restaurants, shopping centres and larger shops. However, it is useful to carry some cash for small shops, markets, street vendors and some taxis.

For currency exchange:

Compare rates before exchanging money.
Avoid exchanging large amounts at the airport, where rates may be less favourable.
Banks and established exchange offices in the city are generally better choices.
ATMs are widely available; check your bank’s fees before withdrawing money.
Keep some small Turkish-lira notes for small purchases and tips.

Mosques and the Call to Prayer

Istanbul has hundreds of historic mosques, many of which are still active places of worship. The most famous include the Hagia Sophia Mosque, Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque), Süleymaniye Mosque and Eyüp Sultan Mosque. Istanbul’s official tourism information lists numerous historic mosques and religious sites throughout the city.

You will hear the adhan, the Islamic call to prayer, from mosque loudspeakers several times a day. The exact times change throughout the year according to sunrise and sunset. During prayer times, access to some mosques may be restricted, especially around Friday noon prayer.

When visiting a mosque:

Dress modestly.
Cover your shoulders and knees.
Women should cover their hair; scarves are normally available at major mosques.
Remove your shoes before entering the prayer area.
Do not photograph people who are praying without permission.
Keep your voice low and follow instructions from mosque staff.

Shop Opening Hours

Opening hours vary, but typical hours are approximately:

Shopping malls: 10:00–22:00, usually every day.
Bazaars and traditional markets: roughly 09:00–19:00, although individual shops vary.
Small independent shops: often open from morning until evening, with some closing for a lunch break.

The Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar are excellent places to experience traditional shopping. Bargaining is common in bazaars, while prices in shopping malls and fixed-price stores are normally non-negotiable.

Always check the opening hours of individual museums and attractions before visiting, as some museums close on particular weekdays and opening times can change seasonally.

Main Attractions
Hagia Sophia

A spectacular historic building that has served as a church, museum and mosque. It is one of Istanbul’s most important landmarks.

Blue Mosque

Also known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, it is famous for its elegant Ottoman architecture and blue İznik tiles. It remains an active mosque, so tourist visits are organised around prayer times.

Topkapı Palace

The former palace of the Ottoman sultans. Allow several hours to explore its courtyards, collections and spectacular views over the Bosphorus.

Basilica Cistern

A huge underground Byzantine water reservoir with impressive columns and atmospheric lighting.

Grand Bazaar

One of the world’s best-known historic covered markets, with thousands of shops selling carpets, jewellery, ceramics, leather goods, souvenirs and other products.

Spice Bazaar

A colourful market specialising in spices, Turkish delight, dried fruit, nuts, tea and other food products.

Galata Tower

A historic tower offering panoramic views over Istanbul and the Golden Horn.

Süleymaniye Mosque

A magnificent Ottoman mosque with a quieter atmosphere and excellent views of the city.

Dolmabahçe Palace

A lavish 19th-century palace on the European shore of the Bosphorus.

Bosphorus

A boat trip or public ferry ride is one of the best ways to experience Istanbul. The Bosphorus separates Europe from Asia and offers views of palaces, mosques, waterfront mansions and modern Istanbul.

Taksim Square and İstiklal Avenue

A lively area known for shops, restaurants, cafés, historic buildings and the famous red tram.

Istanbul’s official tourism website highlights Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern, Galata Tower and Topkapı Palace among the city’s key landmarks.

Useful Tip for November

Because November can be rainy and cool, plan outdoor sightseeing for the clearer parts of the day and keep museums, palaces and bazaars as alternatives when the weather is poor. Istanbul is a large city, so grouping attractions by neighbourhood will save time and reduce unnecessary travel.
