General Overview
Ireland is a friendly and welcoming country known for its rich culture, green landscapes, and vibrant cities. Dublin, the capital, is a lively European city combining historic charm with a modern, cosmopolitan atmosphere. English is the main language, and visitors will find travel and everyday services easy to navigate.
Electricity & Plugs
Voltage: 230 V
Frequency: 50 Hz
Plug type: Type G (three rectangular pins, same as in the UK).
➤ If you’re coming from mainland Europe, the Nordics, or the Baltics, you will need a plug adapter.
➤ Universal adapters are widely sold at airports and convenience stores.
Traffic & Driving
Side of the road: Left-hand driving.
Speed limits:
120 km/h on motorways
100 km/h on national roads
50 km/h in urban areas (unless otherwise indicated)
Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers.
If you plan to rent a car, an EU or international driver’s license is accepted.
Dublin’s city centre has limited parking — public transport, taxis, or walking are usually easier options.
Public Transportation in Dublin
Dublin has an efficient and expanding public transport network:
DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit): coastal rail service connecting city centre with seaside towns (Howth, Dún Laoghaire, Bray).
LUAS: modern tram system with two main lines (Green and Red) linking major districts and suburbs.
Dublin Bus: extensive city and suburban bus routes; real-time updates available via the TFI (Transport for Ireland) app.
Leap Card: reusable travel card for buses, LUAS, and DART. Purchase at newsagents or online.
Taxi & Rideshare: Licensed taxis are safe and metered; Uber works with licensed taxis in Ireland (not private rides).
Currency & Payments
Currency: Euro (€).
Cards: Credit and debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Revolut) are widely accepted; contactless payments (“tap”) are the norm.
ATMs are easy to find in city areas, but check withdrawal fees with your home bank.
Shops & Daily Timetable
Grocery stores: typically open 08:00–22:00 (some until midnight, especially in Dublin).
Common chains include Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, SuperValu, and Dunnes Stores.
Shopping centres & retail stores: usually open 09:00–18:00 Monday–Saturday; on Sundays 11:00–18:00.
Restaurants and pubs:
Lunch: 12:00–15:00
Dinner: 17:30–22:00
Pubs: generally open until 23:30–00:30, depending on the day.
Tipping is customary in restaurants (around 10–12% if not included in the bill).
Dublin Airport (DUB)
Location: 10 km north of Dublin city centre.
Terminals: Two terminals (T1 & T2) — both modern and well signposted.
Transport to city:
Aircoach and Dublin Express buses run 24/7, taking 25–35 minutes to the city centre.
Taxi to city centre costs around €30–40, depending on time and traffic.
Car hire services are available in both terminals.
Facilities: free Wi-Fi, currency exchange, VAT refund desks, lounges, duty-free shopping, and good dining options.
Departures: Arrive 2 hours before European flights and 3 hours before long-haul flights.
