Rail Service Between Finland and Sweden to Launch in August The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) and VR have signed a public service contract for passenger rail services between Oulu, Tornio, and Haparanda. Daily train services between Oulu and Haparanda will begin on 10 August 2026. According to VR, launching the service has required close cooperation between Finnish and Swedish authorities, particularly regarding customs procedures and cross-border travel arrangements. Daily rail traffic between the two countries will officially commence on 10 August, with celebratory events planned at stations along the route. Tickets on Sale Next Week Tickets for the Oulu–Haparanda route will go on sale next Tuesday. Detailed timetables will also be available on VR’s website and mobile app. The service will operate 28 times per week, with two departures in each direction every day of the week. Jointly Funded Connection The rail connection is funded through a partnership involving the Finnish government, the cities of Oulu and Tornio, and the Sea Lapland Development Centre. The new service represents an important step in strengthening cross-border connectivity and tourism between Finland and Sweden.
